Is the ability to listen to, understand and use words. It involves learning about the structure and sequence of speech sounds, vocabulary, grammar and rules of engaging in appropriate and effective conversation.
During the preschool years this area of development involves socialization, or learning social norms and customs and becoming a member of a community. It includes learning how to interact with adults and children in ways that support all other areas of learning.
This area influences the child’s ability to process information and experiences. As well as the ability to process information, remember, classify, solve problems, acquire language, read and understand mathematics.
This area includes childrens’ gross motor (large-muscle) and fine motor (small-muscle) skills. Balance; coordination; and locomotion, or traveling, are part of the gross-motor development. Similarly, fine-motor skills progress from the child grabbing an object with his whole hand, picking up a small item with his thumb and index finger, and eventually controlling the hand muscles needed for writing.
